Plants Matter!

At Stand With Nature, we believe that plants have an amazing ability to make your mind, body, and our planet feel better.

Our Story

Hi there, I'm Kim from Stand With Nature

Why I love to help people with their plants ... I was a plant geek that got bullied in high school

I’m one of the founders of Stand With Nature. I’m honored you’ve come to learn more about us and our revolutionary new planters.

I’ve loved plants for over 25 years, but I’ve had my share of houseplants that didn’t make it. I know first hand how frustrating this can be.

I started growing plants when I was in middle school. I shared a room with my sister and my half of the room was filled with plants. I was a plant geek.

I grew up in a blue collar neighborhood in south San Diego. Not the "nice" part of San Diego that you might have visited or seen on TV.

I was able to transfer to a high school in a nearby wealthy beach town. It was terrifying walking in that first day.

I was bowled over by everything. It was way different than where I grew up. I felt awkward and out of place, afraid of somehow giving away the fact that I clearly didn’t belong there.

When it got down to it, I didn’t have the Southern California beach "look."

I was different. I didn’t look or dress like the other kids. I got bullied, made fun of and told I would never make anything out of myself.

This all inspired me get even more into houseplants. Plants were my hobby and my refuge from the bullying and ridicule I faced. My plants were something I could feel good about.

One upside in all of this was I was motivated. I worked hard to get into a good college. I went to UCSD; so I could save money living at home.

While I worked my way through college, I got more and more into plants. That's when I really got into helping people with their plants.

After I graduated, I moved out and got a small place. Then I got married. My husband and I wanted to live in a smaller community where we could buy our own place. So my husband and I decided to move.

We bought a home in a small town outside of Nashville, Tennessee. A place where Icould grow plants and we can raise our family. We just love the small towncommunity vibe.

They say follow your passion, so I did. I geeked out on plant books by reading book after book on plants. I started a plant group in my town. I love helping other people with their plant journey.

One constant over the years has been seeing so many people frustrated andembarrassed when their houseplants are unhealthy and die. I’v e seen it so manytimes.

Now, I'm a Mom of three kids. We love living in Tennessee.

Here’s how it all started…

Like many people, the COVID shut-down had a huge effect on my life. Like I mentioned I was living in Nashville. The company that I had been working for shut down. I needed a new direction in life.

At the same time, I was contacted by my friend May, who lived in San Diego. May’s also a “plant person.” She had an idea about trying to design a new planter. May loves beautiful, high quality wood furniture with excellent craftsmanship because it gives you warmth in a room and a connection to nature.

May wanted wood planters that would fit the style of her home: solid wood planters that are quality and handmade with sustainable practices. And, of course, the planters needed to have drainage.

May wanted wood planters that would fit the style of her home: solid wood planters that are quality and handmade with sustainable practices. And, of course, the planters needed to have drainage.

We couldn’t believe that there were no wood planters on the market that met all of our high standards of quality and environmental impact. Being an artist and a designer, and necessity being the mother of invention, prompted May to sketch a design for a quality wood planter with drainage.

Nothing became of her wood planter sketches, until necessity hit closer to home. Like many women, May faced the need to start a career. She doesn’t have a college degree, nor had she worked since she was married, years ago.

May contacted me because she knew that I was looking for a new direction also. When we talked it became apparent that at our own houses, we had the same problems that many people have with their houseplants. Sometimes they did really well, and other times they didn't. Most of the time, we didn't know why this happened, and it felt like we were playing a guessing game.

However, when May and I considered the idea of using see through plastic liners for the wood planters, everything started to become clear and make sense.

We knew that overwatering and underwatering were the two biggest causes of houseplants being unhealthy or worse yet, dying. It all came together for our new planters when we realized that our beautiful wood planters would not only have great drainage and aeration – but they could and would also solve the biggest problem that people have with plants – over and under watering. They are truly special because they take the guess-work out of when to water your plants.

Our Revolutionary Innovation

The Stand With Nature planter is what we made after trying out lots of different versions and doing lots of research and work.

We're really happy to share them with the world to help people like you grow more and healthier plants! We’re so proud that it is beautiful, eco-friendly, and it takes the frustration out of growing houseplants. Everyone that has some raves about them. We know you’ll love yours also.

Thanks so much for visiting with us.
